Repair
One of our greatest concerns for the world tour is the ability to maintain and repair our bicycles. As we discovered in Alaska, many roads outside of the mainland U.S. are in poor condition, which can be very hard on bicycle frames and equipment. Plus, in many areas bicycle repair shops will be few and far between, and not equipped to repair specialized cycling equipment. Thus while we are happy to cut down weight on cooking equipment, our bicycle repair kit may seem larger than the average tourist requires.
- 1 bicycle pump
- 2 puncture repair kits
- 2 spare inner tubes
- 1 spare tire
- 6 spare spokes (in Alaska, Lorenz’s rear tire actually crumpled under the weight of pulling the child trailer and gear, snapping 5 spokes at once)
- spoke wrench
- spare chain links
- chain repair tool
- bicycle lubricants (grease, oil)
- fishing line (Paula has sewn together several seemingly irreparable blown and punctured tires with fishing line--which can last up to several hundred miles)
- sewing repair kit with heavy duty leather needle (see above), heavy duty thread, safety pins
- duct tape (used for everything from repairing tent holes to holding together worn out shoes)
- elastic bands
- coil of wire
- plastic phone ties (have come in handy for all sorts of emergency repairs)
- multipurpose tool set
- Allen wrenches
- combination open-end wrenches
